2012 Bedrock "Ode to Lulu" Rosé

SKU #1126945 91 points Int'l Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Pale orange. High-pitched aromas of orange zest, strawberry and white flowers, plus a hint of white pepper. Dry and precise, showing very good cut to its citrus fruit and red berry flavors. Finishes tangy and long, with resonating spiciness and a hint of blood orange. This year's bottling adds carignan from Contra Costa County to the usual mourvedre, which is only 60% of the blend this time. Inner quote mark (7/2013)

K&L Notes

This unusual, standout California rosé is made according to a set of standards by winemaker Morgan Peterson, whose father (Ravenswood's Joel Peterson) helped to popularize old vine Zinfandel in the 1980s: it's whole cluster pressed, and mainly from old Mourvedre vines. In 2012, Peterson blended in some old vine Carignane from Contra Costa County--that's why it's labeled California instead of Sonoma Valley, where the 1888 Bedrock Vineyard supplies most of the Mourvedre, along with some from down the road at Pagani Ranch, planted in 1922. The wine is just 12.% abv, and has just the faintest salmon-pink hue, almost like a Blanc de Noirs. But that's deceptive: the palate is fat with fruit and sizzling crisp acidity at the same time.
