2011 Melville "Block M" Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir

SKU #1126205 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Formerly known as Carrie’s, the 2011 Pinot Noir Block M comes from a windswept mesa that lies next to the Terraces block. Seeing 33% whole cluster inclusion during fermentation and aging all in neutral French oak, it has a dense, meaty bouquet of darker fruit (black cherries, currants), loamy earth, spice box and mineral to go with a medium to full-bodied, gorgeously textured and balanced feel on the palate. Showing the most depth and structure in the lineup, with a full, rich mid-palate, this knockout effort should be given another year or two in the cellar and consumed through 2021. Drink 2015-2021. Winemaker Greg Brewer and grower Chad Melville continue to knock it out of the park with these Melville releases. Focusing on site, if not plot, specific releases, neutral oak, no SO2 until racking and varying degrees of whole cluster are the norm here. The wines have individual characters and, stylistically, lean toward the more complex, finesse-driven side of the spectrum. They “wow” more for their balance and nuance than their power and richness. They also remain reasonably priced! Inner quote mark (8/2013)

Outer quote mark The 2011 Pinot Noir Estate Block M (formerly Carrie's) is endowed with serious energy, power and structure. One of the more austere wines in the Melville range, the Block M is much less expressive today than the other 2011s. Ideally, the Block M is best cellared for another year or two. Expressive savory notes add complexity and distinction on the finish. Greg Brewer describes the berries in this site as tiny in 2011. The stems were ripe enough for Brewer to use 60% whole clusters.
