Looking at the 2009 Cumulus Vineyard #3, it is an interesting blend of 80% Syrah, 14% Grenache and 6% Roussanne that spent 30 months in 30% new French oak. Offering up lively black fruits, pepper and roasted meat-like aromas on the nose, it’s a total knockout on the palate and has layers of richness that stay perfectly focused. Seamless, layered and long, with sweet tannin ... While a separate operation, these are certainly on par with all of Manfred’s other Sine Qua Non efforts and are thrilling wines!(JD)

Vinous
The 2009 Next of Kyn - No. 3 comes across as a mix of the 2007 and 2008, with the sensual richness of the former and the darker profile of the latter. Because of its impeccable balance, the 2009 is hugely rewarding today. Succulent dark cherry, cloves, menthol and licorice add nuance throughout, but above all else, the 2009 is a wine that can be enjoyed with minimum fuss over the next decade or so. This retrospective tasting provided a great opportunity to revisit the first seven releases of Manfred and Elaine Krankl’s Next of Kyn. As compelling as the Krankls’ Sine Qua Non wines are, I have always found Next of Kyn to be just as fascinating, especially in recent years. This vertical only served to reinforce that impression. Primary cherry and dark berries on the highly perfumed nose. Plush, alluringly sweet blackberry and cherry-cola flavors are complicated by notes of cracked pepper and potpourri, with a smoky quality gaining strength in the glass. Shows excellent clarity and power on the finish, which features smooth, even tannins, sweet black and blue fruit and a hint of five-spice powder. This extroverted, youthful wine checks in at 15.6% alcohol but is in no way excessively heavy or hot. (JR)
