Red-ruby. Brooding aromas of currant, raspberry, licorice and mint, plus a hint of charred oak. Juicy, intensely flavored and sharply delineated; a powerful, focused wine that's currently hiding its considerable density and richness. Austere finish features big, dusty tannins and a menthol component. Promises to be the strongest of this estate's '98 bottlings but will require seven or eight years of additional bottle aging. Serralunga d’Alba. Lustrous mid ruby and just beginning to mature with bricky tinges. Fine minerally nose with notes that remind of a spice rack. With aeration more and more depth, and savoury rather than fruity. No signs of undergrowth or any tertiary aromas! A perfect triangle of savoury fruit, nervy acidity and long, long sandy tannins on the palate. Still so youthful and energetic. More medium than full bodied, like this has much less alcohol than its stated 14.5%. The great minerality is the wine’s backbone. (WS)

K&L Notes
Antonio Galloni writes for Vinous: "As this tasting demonstrated, Massolino's Vigna Rionda is capable of developing extraordinary complexity in bottle. With the exception of the warmest, most precocious years, it is a wine that starts coming into its own around age ten, but that really blossoms between ages 15-20. Even with extended bottle age, it remains a classically structured Barolo with a firm tannic spine." (10/2007)
