Balvenie 12 Year Old Single Barrel Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1121904 91 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark An aromatic Scotch with bright honey, pear and floral touches, this single-barrel offering features creamy custard, banana and a touch of cocoa before finishing on a baking spice note. The alcohol presence is considerable; temper it with a good dose of water and consider pairing it with a rich dessert. (KN) Inner quote mark (12/2013)

K&L Notes

As Balvenie continues its trajectory toward Glenfiddich/Glenlivet/Macallan status, competing with Glenmorangie for a spot in the Final Four, their quality remains steadfast. Any Balvenie fan would eat this single barrel up – big time. It is decadent, mouthwatering stuff. A first-fill ex-Bourbon barrel malt that oozes fat vanilla, tropical fruit sweetness, and spice on the finish, further emboldened by a 47.8% alcohol content. It's pricier than the Doublewood, but it's single barrel hooch and it's a higher proof.

The very special Balvenie 12 Year Single Barrel is really where real connoisseur of this Speyside gem should start their journey. This is true NAKED obfuscated Balvenie. Indeed, it is equally unchilltered and has much more body and richness than the standard 12 year. You don't get the tinge of Sherry that the Doublewood provides, but this is easily twice the whisky only a slight premium over the standard offering. The nose is chalked full of the most subtle aromatics and picking them out is difficult due to the complexity. Tons of fresh malt, ripe green and yellow fruits, wild herbal undertones. On palate, plenty of those stones fruits taking front and center. Great texture, great freshness and a wonderful minty malty finish. These are of course single barrels so subtle differences exist, but I haven't had a stinker yet. Grab them while you can.
