2009 John Duval "Plexus" Grenache-Shiraz-Mourvèdre Barossa Valley South Australia

SKU #1117708 96 points James Halliday

Outer quote mark The crimson-purple hue puts the often insipid colour of Barossa Valley SGMs to shame; the fragrant bouquet and vibrant black cherry and plum fruit of the palate likewise; quality French oak has been used to maximum advantage. Inner quote mark (8/2011)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Deep garnet colored with a hint of purple, the 2009 Plexus Shiraz Grenache gives notes of warm mulberries, kirsch and black tea with hints of Indian spices, fenugreek, cumin seed and dusty earth. Full bodied with a great concentration of opulent fruit, it has a medium level of silky tannins and lively acid to support, finishing long and harmonious. Delicious now, it should cellar to 2019+. Inner quote mark (2/2012)

93 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Polished, round and plush, but not over the top, offering a mouthful of ripe blueberry, blackberry, cream and spice flavors that merge seamlessly and persist through the long, refined finish. Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2020. Inner quote mark (6/2011)

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark (48% shiraz, 31% grenache and 21% mourvedre): Bright purple. A complex and expressive nose displays spice-accented red berries and candied cherry, along with anise, vanilla and cola. The spiciness carries onto the palate, adding bite and lift to the red fruit compote and floral flavors. Becomes sweeter on the clinging, impressively persistent finish, which leaves notes of smoke and licorice behind. Already drinking very well. Inner quote mark (7/2011)

91 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark High-toned red fruit and bon bon, with concentration and balancing freshness. Long and tactile. An agile wine that will be good at the dinner table. Inner quote mark (8/2012)

This wine is made from a blend of 48% Shiraz, 31% Grenache and 21% Mourvedre from old vine material throughout the Barossa Valley including old bush vine Mourvedre from the Krondorf and Light Pass sub-regions that are over 100 years old. The Plexus is 100% barrel matured for 15 months with just 10% new French oak hogsheads. John feels that while in 2009 the Shiraz was very good, the Grenache and Mourvedre was some of the best fruit he's worked with in years. The bouquet brings a combination of red and black fruits with cedar and spice that soar from the glass. On the palate, the intense core of fruit is framed by fine tannins with integrated oak offering structure and a layered long finish.
