Nikka Yoichi 15 Year Japanese Single Malt Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1116990 94 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark The Yoichi 15-year-old packs the trademark charcoal punch that is maybe due to the fact that Yoichi is one of the last distilleries on earth to use direct heat from a charcoal flame to fire their pot stills. Grassy and fresh, there is a fine transition from the fresher characteristics to more tobacco and from fresh tree fruit to more dried stone fruit... Inner quote mark (9/2014)

Outer quote mark This elegant single malt from Nikka bears a dark, vibrant gold color, with smoke and caramel aromas. On the palate, look for well-balanced notes of citrus peel, cedar and oak, and a gentle waft of smoke. An astringent sensation on the finish sets the mouth watering, leading to a full-bodied, almost oily texture. Recommended for sipping neat. Inner quote mark (2/2013)

K&L Notes

Finally here! With the global appetite for Japanese whisky reaching a feverish level, the second biggest company on the island has finally graced the United States with its presence. Nikka has long been the Pepsi to Suntory's Coca-Cola. With more richness, nuttiness, and stone-fruited character than something like the Yamazaki 12, the 15 year old is a peated (aka smoky) expression that offers incredible depth and nuance in a very elegant package. A remarkable whisky for those in the know.

Nikka's northern distillery on the island of Hokkaido makes a slightly peated style of whisky; more along the line of Talisker, however, rather than Lagavulin. It's rounded and supple on the palate as well, making it one creamy, and slightly smokey delight.
