2009 Larcis Ducasse, St-Emilion

SKU #1113990 96 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark Showing better than a previous bottle, the 2009 Larcis Ducasse is just now starting to come into its own, offering terrific, full-bodied aromas and flavors of blackcurrants, licorice, espresso, and leafy herbs. This deep, rich, full-bodied effort has absorbed its oak élevage beautifully, has a layered, unctuous texture, and plenty of sweet tannin. It’s a heavenly Saint Emilion to enjoy over the coming 15+ years. Inner quote mark (2/2018)

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark A complex set of aromas ranging from coffee to forest floor, herbs, licorice, blackberries, cassis and cherries all seem to jump from the glass, and then are joined by a hint of charcoal as well camphor. This is an impressive, full-bodied, dense, concentrated wine that is more up-front and approachable than the 2005 was at a similar stage, but it is remarkably expressive, full-bodied, dense and capable of lasting 20-25 years. 96 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2009 Larcis-Ducasse displays engaging and complex, slightly earthy aromas on the nose: red fruit mixed with roses and melted tar. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well judged acidity. Velvety and smooth in texture with a judicious sprinkling of spice towards the finish that fans out with some style. This is an excellent Saint-Émilion that should age well over the next couple of decades. Easily the best bottle that I have tasted, this seems to show better than Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. (NM) Inner quote mark (3/2019)

95 points Decanter

Outer quote mark This has rich, sexy layers with powerful black pepper, olive, liquorice notes and crushed berry fruits. This is the most 'Right Bank' of the vertical, but still with the mouthwatering salinity and foot-on-the-break feel, giving a clear expression of the two sides of Larcis - clay power with limestone austerity. Brilliant. 55% new oak was used. (JA) Inner quote mark (9/2019)

94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Tons of ripe plum and damson here plus some bitter chocolate and balsamic richness that fill out the opulent body nicely. Generous supple tannins support the massive frame. Bold but long and harmonious finish. Drink or hold. (Horizontal Tasting, London, 2019) Inner quote mark (2/2019)

Outer quote mark (81% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Franc): Red-ruby. Superripe, almost candied aromas of maraschino cherry, woodsmoke and coffee. Sweet, plush and impressively deep, with intense, penetrating dark cherry and licorice flavors that quickly shut down in the glass. Seriously structured and tannic wine, especially for Merlot, and very long on the aftertaste. I'd forget about this for at least five years; by that point my original rating may look conservative. An outstanding vintage for this chateau. (ST) 93+ Inner quote mark (7/2012)

93 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark This has the fleshy, almost corpulent feel of the vintage, with enticing linzer torte, currant preserves, blackberry coulis and melted licorice notes. Warm and inviting already, with a nice sappy feel at the core. The finish picks up a slightly extracted, chewy edge that lacks the vivacity of the '05 or '10. Although well-stuffed and worthy of cellaring, the minerality may have dissipated by the time this comes of age. (JM, Web Only-2013) Inner quote mark

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Very dark. Nicely integrated nose. Big blackberry compote on the nose. Lots of life and potential still. Good balance and energy. 17/20 points. (JR) Inner quote mark (2/2019)

K&L Notes

96 points Antonio Galloni in Vinous: "The 2009 Larcis Ducasse is an exotic, flamboyant wine endowed with remarkable depth and pure pedigree. Sweet tobacco, mint, pine and red-fleshed fruits are front and center. Even with all of its voluptuousness and richness, the 2009 is firm and quite tannic. Readers should be prepared to cellar it for at least a handful of years." (3/2017) 95 points Lisa Perotti-Brown in Wine Advocate: "The deep garnet colored 2009 Larcis Ducasse sashays out of the glass with compelling scents of kirsch, dried roses, Black Forest cake and crème de cassis with hints of black tea, cigar box and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is tautly structured with ripe, grainy tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and perfumed." (3/2019)
