Pierre Paillard "Les Parcelles" Grand Cru Extra Brut Bouzy Champagne (1.5L)

SKU #1108050 91 points Decanter

Outer quote mark A very complete and harmonious example, the savoury Pinot undertow of red fruit complemented by elegant Chardonnay, with a gently beguiling creamy texture. Unpretentious and quietly persuasive. (ME, SF, TH) Inner quote mark (2/2017)

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark (60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay; disgorged in October, 2013): Light gold, with a faint onion skin cast. Spicy orange zest and honeydew on the fragrant, mineral-accented nose. Dry and tightly focused, offering lively Meyer lemon and melon flavors and a deeper suggestion of nectarine. Finishes with building floral character and excellent tangy persistence, leaving bitter citrus zest and dusty mineral notes behind. (JR) Inner quote mark (1/2015)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Pierre Paillard's Bouzy Grand Cru Brut (the final name has still to be decided when I tasted it in March 2016) is a 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay blend, based on 2011 (65%) and 2010 (35%) that was disgorged with 3.5 grams per liter in September 2015. The wine is pure and subtle, but intense and fruity on the nose - already indicating remarkable finesse. It also has great finesse and purity on the palate; it is light and mineral, so pretty, and full of tension and character with a persistent finish. There are lemon flavors in the aftertaste. 90 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark This harmonious Champagne boasts a fine, creamy mousse and a delicate mix of Anjou pear, biscuit, honey, graphite and fleur de sel flavors. Features a fresh, almond-tinged finish. Disgorged July 2015. (AN) Inner quote mark (10/2016)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Deep bronze colour. Surely lots of oak here? Rich on the nose. Almost sweet, which makes the Extra Brut all the more remarkable. Pretty full-on mousse. This is almost more like a pale red burgundy that happens to have bubbles. It has a suggestion of Pinot Gris perfume about it too. Quite a statement! And not a silly price for the distinctive character it offers. A labour of love? Not dense, though, so I wouldn't age this. *Good value* (JR) 17/20 Inner quote mark (6/2020)

K&L Notes

I am incredibly excited about the extraordinary quality of this top grower's Champagne. The name might sound familiar, as they are cousins with the negociant Bruno Paillard. But their production is completely separate, and unlike Bruno, all estate-grown. And what an estate they have... 28 acres exclusively in the Montagne de Reims grand cru top village of Bouzy. There they exclusively cultivate their own selections of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay--they do not have a single clone on the estate. This wine is composed of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, based on the 2007 harvest with 31% 2006 as reserve wine and dosed at 7 grams per liter. This wine has such power and presence it deserves a great pairing like lobster, but also has the elegance to enjoy as the aperitif. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)

It's not unusual for me to be blown away by Gary's champagne selections, but wow. This is a stunner and for such an incredible price it's a bit hard to believe. The purity and intensity of the minerality would be the focus if it weren't for the richness of the body. The red fruits are crystal clear - wild cherry and cold raspberries abound. It's a beautiful, refreshing, and elegant wine that is satisfying on its own but would also be perfectly paired with anything from cured meats to french fries. If it's salty and a little savory, this should hit the spot perfectly. Add to that the incredible pedigree of all Grand Cru Bouzy Estate fruit from massal selected vines and it's easily one of the best Champagnes available.
