2010 DuMol Russian River Valley Syrah

SKU #1107076 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2010 Syrah is rich, explosive and incredibly beautiful. Blackberries, cassis, graphite, savory herbs, white flowers and black pepper all emerge from this drop-dead gorgeous wine. More exotic notes of orange peel, spices, nutmeg, cloves and myriad of aromas and flavors take shape in the glass over time. Simply put, this is a fabulous, drop-dead gorgeous wine from DuMol. The 2010 can be enjoyed today, but it has more than enough stuffing to drink well for a number of years. In 2010, the Jack Robert’s Run was declassified to the straight Russian River Syrah bottling. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. Winemaker Andy Smith describes 2009 as a “sweet, forward vintage,” while 2011 is more “dynamic and commercial.” Smith reserves his highest praise for 2010, which he calls his favorite among the three current vintages. In 2011, Smith bulked out 20% of his Pinot Noirs, including the entire production of the Eoin. All the 2011 Pinots came in before the rains. Smith used whole clusters only for the Aidan, as botrytis was an issue in all the other Pinot vineyards. The Charles Heintz Chardonnay came in after the rains. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to taste the 2011 Syrahs, as the final blends had not yet been put together at the time of this tasting. (4/2013)

Pure, rich and layered, offering dark berry, spice, mineral and cedar. Fleshy, but tight and firm on the finish, with touches of nutmeg and espresso. Drink now through 2022. (3/2013)

91 points Connoisseurs Guide

There is a fine sense of energy and vitality evident from the very first here, and the wine is convincingly keyed on exceptionally pure and precise Syrah fruit with a fine mix of dark berries, spice and lightly laid-on oak running its length. It is firm and no more than nominally tannic with the sense of a wine that should age famously, and it never trades unduly on ripeness. Allow at least a half decade here, and expect that it will still be going strong ten or twelve years hence. (11/2012)

K&L Notes

DuMol's 2010 Russian River Valley Syrah is a blend of 3 vineyards: 38% Hoppe-Kelly, 33% Greywacke, and 29% Gregori. Grapes were hand-harvested and sorted in the vineyard and again at the winery before native yeast fermentation. The wine spent 16 months in 33% new French oak and was bottled unfiltered. From the winery: "Dark purple/black color. Bright and lively, aromatic fireworks: wild berries, white pepper, savory herbs, and spices. Floral violet and black olive notes. Grilled meat and tar notes grow with time. Brisk white pepper palate entry. Cassis and licorice. Spirited, energetic palate. Natural density and blackberry richness emerges with air. Long, fine and penetrating back end."

Definitely the surprise wine of our visit. I had never tasted a DuMOL Syrah before and I came away very impressed by this wine. Dark purple in color but with plenty of acidity- very lively on the palate. Tons of Northern Rhone-ish smoked meat character to go along with dense, pure black berry and purple plum fruit.
