1996 Clos du Marquis, St-Julien

SKU #110506 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 1996 Clos du Marquis is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon (lower than recent vintages), 33% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot (that usually goes into Leoville-Las Cases). Much like the 1996 Potensac that I tasted alongside at the château, the nose is youthful and backward with blackberry, freshly tilled soil, cedar and tobacco scents that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth entry, plenty of crisp and pure black fruit laced with cedar, harmonious and long. This is a great Saint Julien at 20 years of age, firing on all cylinders and, to be honest, surpassing some of the Grand Vins in this vintage. Probably still available at a decent price, this comes thoroughly recommended. (NM) Inner quote mark (10/2016)

Outer quote mark Beautiful aromas of currant, lightly toasted oak and perfume. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a tight finish. Still holding back. (JS, Web—2007) Inner quote mark

Clos du Marquis is a value in any Bordeaux vintage, in my opinion, but the 1996 expression might be the best example of that consistency. This is top claret in peak form, and one that showcases classic St. Julien iron and minerality for those looking to understand some of the trademark characteristics of the appellation. Made by Leoville Las Cases, the wine is clearly made with care and with a finely-tuned palate in mind. This is beautiful wine from a great harvest that should probably be much more expensive than it is. Do a price comparison with other available 1996 bottles and you'll see what I mean.
