1995 Lagrange, St-Julien

SKU #110199 94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark A classic wine to drink now. Plenty of dark berry and spice character. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a beautiful depth and intensity. Fresh earth and sweet tobacco aftertaste. Inner quote mark (7/2014)

91 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Licorice, blackberry and mineral undertones. Full-bodied, with silky and refined tannins. Long finish. Just about ready. Balanced and harmonious. (JS, Web Only-2007) Inner quote mark

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 1995 Lagrange is similar to the 1996, but the fruit is sweeter, the acidity lower, and the wine less marked by Cabernet Sauvignon. The color is a deep ruby/purple. The wine boasts a roasted herb, charcoal, black currant, mineral, and new oak-scented nose. Medium to full-bodied and ripe, with copious quantities of jammy black cherry and cassis flavors presented in a medium-bodied, low acid, moderately tannic style, this well-endowed, purely made wine requires cellaring. (RP) Inner quote mark (2/1998)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Dark ruby. Lots of minerals on the nose: damp gravel? Sweet start and pretty aggressive tannins. Very chewy finish. This demands time. Inner quote mark (3/2011)

K&L Notes

Chateau Lagrange is a third-growth St-Julien owned by the Suntory group and comprising 270 acres situated next to Gruaud Larose. The estate went through major improvements and huge investments through the '80s, '90s, and 2000s and now shows the amazing resurrection of the estate into the producer it always had potential to be. 90 points from Neal Martin for Wine Advocate: "A blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 13% Petit Verdot, the ’95 Lagrange is surprisingly muted on the nose – perhaps one of those 1995’s that has gone into its shell a little. A little herbaceous, slightly meaty in fact. Comparing it to the 1996, it certainly has less freshness and vitality. The palate is fleshier, but lacking the sense of purpose and breeding of the 1996. Ripe blackberry, raspberry, graphite, cedar and dried blood. Good length, but not as well defined as the 1996 on the finish and I think this will drink sooner. Tasted September 2008."
