Firm and bright, with nicely realized berry and red plum flavors, suggesting richness and suppleness under fine tannins. (HS) (4/1997)
Quite a surprise in a difficult vintage, a strict selection and the superb terroir of Haut Brion triumphed over a very challenging year that produced many hard, relatively herbaceous wines. The color is a surprisingly saturated deep plum/ruby. Some sweet berry fruit intermixed with menthol, graphite, damp earth, and a hint of mushroom emerges in this medium-bodied, very elegant Haut Brion that is still firmly structured but has sweet tannin and surprising length and ripeness. The wine will always represent a sleeper style. (RP) (12/2002)
Chateau Haut-Brion is one of the five First Growth wines of Bordeaux, and the only one from Graves. Located on two hillocks of gravel over clay and sand in Pessac, a classic Graves terroir. It consists of 51 hectares of mostly red cultivars (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot). It is the oldest wine estate in Bordeaux and was even served to Charles II! The estate is now owned and lovingly managed by the Dillon family - the royal family of Luxembourg.
