1973 Chateau Pellehaut 44 Year Old K&L Exclusive Tenareze Vintage Armagnac (750ml)

While Bas-Armagnac gets all the press, and the Haut-Armagnac gets completely ignored, the Tenareze region of Armagnac is quietly producing some of the best brandies in the world. Much like the Borderies region in Cognac, the Tenareze brandies seem to have more fruit and a bit more life than the more classic Armagnac style. We visited Chateau Pellehaut on our first day in Armagnac last January and were completely overwhelmed by the quality of spirit. Using only new or first fill barrels for the beginning years of maturation, the Armagnacs have richness, weight, and spice. While Pellehaut has since switched to entirely Folle Blanche grape varietals, the 1973 vintage is composed of 90% Ugni Blanc. The palate opens with loads of caramel and a creamy richness the spreads quickly. The aromas are quite Bourbon-esque, with hints of soft vanilla and charred oak drifting out of the glass. The complexity of the brandy is astounding - candied fruit, stewed prunes, toasted almond, baking spices, and earthy warehouse notes, all swirling around at the same time. For an Armagnac of this quality, at an age of more than 40 years old, the price we negotiated is amazing. I'm expecting this to be one of our best selling Armagnacs ever and I expect it to really put Pellehaut on the map stateside. (David Driscoll, K&L Spirits Buyer)

The 1973 Pellehaut is made from 100% Ugni-Blanc grapes. This 44-year-old Armagnac shows its age by offering a full-bodied and concentrated mouth feel and delicious and beautiful flavors. Rich and round at 44 years old, it has not lost its zest and liveliness. This is one to sip and enjoy.

There is a saline quality to the 44 year old 1973 Armagnac that I don't pick up in the younger expressions. It's an earthy minerality that I think comes from the Ugni Blanc. I feel almost like I'm in the barrel house. I can smell the stone walls and the dirt in the vineyards. Perhaps some hay for the horses. Gentle and mellow, this is endlessly smooth and easy to sip. It has an extremely long finish that jumps between sweet and savory, but leaves the salinity behind for the nose to enjoy. This is a brandy you can easily get lost in and an absurdly good deal.

Now at 44 years of age and at 43.8%, the 1973 is just as soft and enticing as it's always been. If you're someone who likes your aged booze smooth, silky, supple, and effortless, this is the brandy for you. Creamy and round with plenty of wood, the spice has become almost herbaceous at this point and it plays nicely of the vanilla. This tastes much more expensive than it is.

I was so blown away by this spirit, I found it hard to classify as a beverage.......it was more of an experience, it certainly takes over your olfactory senses with its ethereal...no it isn't ethereal it is real, just so complex, layered, something I want to spend an afternoon with, just watching it evolve and for spirits like this that is how you need to experience it, there isn't an explosive one-time OMG moment, it is more like archaeology, long, slow digging and then you get to experience layer after layer. Wow....
