2010 M. Chapoutier "Les Vignes de Bila-Haut" Côtes-du-Roussillon Villages

SKU #1093335 92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

These Chapoutier wines are sometimes reviewed by my colleagues David Schildknect in his Languedoc-Roussillon report and Lisa Perrotti-Brown in her reviews of Australian wines, so I will just list the wines, my score, and the region from which they emerge. They are of very high quality and deserve readers’ attention. Hopefully my prose has convinced more than a handful of readers to try these remarkable wines from one of the most fascinating and compelling personalities in the entire wine world, and one dedicated to the highest quality. (12/2011)

90 points Wine Spectator

*Best Value* This lithe, powerful red offers concentrated spiced cherry, plum tart and blackberry flavors that feature plenty of spicy notes. A dark chocolate accent lingers on the firm, moderately tannic finish. Best from 2014 through 2018. (9/2012)

This was a wonderful surprise! Loads of fruit but not too much. Good complexity and spice. This has lovely balance and finesse. Black currants, raspberry coulis, asian spicebox and supple tannins. You can't ask for anything better at this price.

What delightful surprise this afternoon when I tasted this wine. I was expecting a heavy, opulent kind of wine and instead I got a very well balanced one. Dried fruit, currants and lifted raspberry, together with coffee and a touch of smoke. Medium tannins give it a nice grip to this refreshing, yet full wine. Try it with any kind of BBQ this summer. It would be just perfect!

The next great wine value is here! The 2010 Bila-Haut is flat-out delicious with gorgeous aromas of wild raspberries, bakers chocolate and hints of exotic Asian spice. On the palate the wine is all dark berry fruit, espresso, dark chocolate and hints of earth & minerals. The wine has remarkable balance and depth and definitely outperforms its modest price tag of $12 a bottle, your next case-worthy selection has arrived and its name is Bila-Haut!
Drink from 2012 to 2014

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
