2007 Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino

SKU #1091153 95 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark From Tuscany's celebrated Frescobaldi wine family, Brunello Castelgiocondo opens with dark, inky concentration and bold aromas of pressed rose, black cherry, exotic spice, leather and unsweetened chocolate. It is beautifully put together, with ample intensity, balance, complexity and silkiness on the finish. Inner quote mark (5/2012)

94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Aromas of violets, dark berries and raspberries, follow through to a full body, with ultra-fine tannins and a long finish. A wine with lovely texture. Chewy. Citrusy undertone. Inner quote mark (1/2012)

Outer quote mark The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Castelgiocondo is a rich, explosive wine endowed with generous fruit and an extroverted personality to match. Black cherries, flowers, licorice and spices are woven together nicely in this deep, layered Brunello. The 2007 will appeal most to readers who appreciate the lush, fruit-driven side of Brunello. This is very well done but falls just a bit short of being viscerally thrilling. (AG) Inner quote mark (4/2012)

90 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark A powerful red, combined with the openness and charm of the vintage. Plum, black cherry, herb and tobacco flavors get support from the structure, with a long finish. (BS) Inner quote mark (10/2012)

The pinnacle of the Frescobaldi properties is Castelgiocondo in Montalcino; here they’ve been making powerful Sangiovese in Montalcino’s southwest quadrant for a long time. Winemaker Nicolo d’Afflito is Bordeaux trained and has blended that technique with the traditional big cask aging that most of Montalcino uses. That character is evident in the wine and gives this Brunello a determined focal point, length and mid palate power, that leads to bold, direct, and richly textured flavors, plum, vanilla and a bit of spice. This wine is going to age nicely for the next 10 -15 years and will do best with a bit of decanting.
Drink from 2016 to 2026
