2010 Spicerack "Punchdown" Sonoma Coast Syrah

SKU #1089161 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Inky purple. Fresh dark berries and violet on the nose, with complicating notes of cracked pepper and licorice. A juicy, taut midweight that offers tangy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a touch of dark chocolate. Finishes with firm grip and a slightly tangy edge, leaving a peppery note behind. (5/2012)

K&L Notes

Spicerack owners Jonathan and Susan Pey know how to make delicious Syrah that hints at the northern Rhone aroma and flavor profile with California fruit intensity. Sourced from two sustainably farmed vineyards in the cool Sonoma Coast--"Rodgers Creek", located next to the famed Durrell vineyard, and "Les Pierres," situated at a slight elevation on the southwest side of Sonoma Mountain--and co-fermented with some Viognier to add lift and viscosity, the 2010 offers a lovely perfume of red and black berries, with cracked pepper and floral highlights. It is lively and fresh, with a dense core of fruit and fine thread of minerals running through. Notes of cured meat and savory spices bring up the finish. Here is some delicious, affordable California Syrah that is also moderate in alcohol (only 13.2%). The food-pairing possibilities are endless!
