2009 Beringer "Reserve" Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1086988 94 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Offers rich, smooth, layered flavors of blackberry, wild berry, plum and cassis. Full-bodied, yet graceful and elegant, this is most interesting on the finish, where the flavors glide along and pick up a subtle lift of spice and mocha. Drink now through 2024. Inner quote mark (4/2012)

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark (60% new oak; includes 2% petit verdot; a blend from several vineyard blocks featuring a higher percentage of rocky soil): Medium ruby. Blackberry, minerals, bitter chocolate, menthol and a crushed rock note on the nose. Lush, broad and dry, with currant and black cherry fruit dominating. Finishes quite suave, with fine but serious tannins and very good length. Inner quote mark (5/2012)

Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark Dark cherry meets oak tannins in this firm, juicy red. There's youthful tension in the tannins, robust and a bit coarser in this vintage than is typical for this wine...a steakhouse pour. Inner quote mark (4/2012)

Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark A little rustic and fruity-sweet now, but could gain traction with a few years in the cellar. Inner quote mark (5/2012)

K&L Notes

We first started tracking down this wine back in 2011 when the Wine Spectator's James Laube went off in an article for his blog in late November. He writes... "It's Beringer's Day in Knights Valley... Beringer and others are proving that Sonoma Valley can make some sensational Cabernets... Last week, in one of my regular weekly blind tastings, I came across a pair of wines that consumers will love. But one is also a wine that has to make Napa Cabernet producers nervous. It's the 2009 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley Reserve, a strikingly excellent Bordeaux-style blend from Sonoma County that offers a wide array of flavors presented in an elegant, graceful style. The price: $45, with 3,600 cases made. It's the best Beringer Knights Valley wine I can recall and one of winemaker Laurie Hook's best efforts... These are the kinds of wines that get you excited about 2009 reds. So far there have been many exciting wines from this vintage, but also a few I've tried that show the difficulties of the growing season."
