2007 Viña Eguía Reserva Rioja

SKU #1085696 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2007 Vina Eguia Reserva is picked from 30-year-old vines in Alavesa and sees 24 months in American oak. It has an attractive, very aromatic bouquet with dried herbs, leather, fennel and a touch of peppermint that is natural and very pure. The palate is very well-balanced with supple tannins, crisp acidity and a refined, mocha-tinged finish that is focused and persistent. This is another superbly crafted Rioja from Eguia. I was immensely impressed by the two wines that I tasted from Bodegas Eguia, located in the Alavesa sub-region in the village of Elciego. The company was founded in 1982 by Julian Murua, who resurrected his father’s winery, which had been established in the 1920s. They both represent outstanding value. Inner quote mark (8/2012)

92 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark *#18 on The Enthusiast 100 of 2011* A sensational deal can be had with this wine, which opens with crusty berry aromas before shifting to cola, lemon peel and licorice. Tight and structured on the palate, with cherry, plum, vanilla and spice flavors. Harmonious and smooth; integrated and just rich enough. Drink now through 2013. Inner quote mark (12/2011)

Add the Vina Eguia Reserva Rioja to the long, long list of fantastic deals from Spain. Drinking perfectly now, this wine has the leather and tobacco notes of an older Rioja while maintaining a youthful balance thanks to the acid. Black cherry, raspberry, and cola notes complement dried herbs, vanilla, and a hint of menthol on the finish. This is a delicious wine for your next bbq.

One of the nicest surprises this year. A nice, spicy and quite affordable Rioja. Dark berries and vanilla supported by a nice structure. Quite delicious.

Did you know department: The name 'Tempranillo' comes from the Spanish 'temprano', defined as early, since this esteemed Iberian variety tends to ripen as much as two weeks before Garnacha or Graciano. And in the spirit of now, this elegant 2007 Riserva, having bided its time for a full 24 months in both American and French oak plus another two years in bottle, is impatiently ready to open and share tonight with a slow-cooked leg of lamb and roasted vegetables. Aromatic purity defined by bright red cherry, balsamic spice and oak-imbued vanilla, with a textured palate of ripe raspberry, red plum, licorice and nuanced tobacco. Well-integrated on the impressively dry, pleasant finish. Keep a few cases around for the holidays and beyond, because even if drinking beautifully now, this wine still has plenty of time to evolve. Strongly recommended.

What a stellar little wine from Eguia. A nice rich supple style, but the time in wood and bottle has tempered the over exuberance of the fruit and allowed some of the finer earthy, savory components, that we love Rioja for, creep in behind. A very good Reserva at a great price.

Talk about a well-matured tempranillo! So classicly Rioja with the vine-ripened red fruit, this $15 reserva over delivers with copious amounts of earth, incense and beautiful baking spices.

An incredible value in a Reserva level Rioja! A perfect marriage between fruit and oak - ripe, red cherry notes complemented by vanilla and spice. Rich and round, smooth-textured, this is a delight to drink.

First thing that came to mind - what kind of lamb am I going to have this with? Great nose of vanilla, coconut and balsamic. But it was the great fruit and tannins that had me running for the market. Trust me grab a bottle you won't be disappointed!

This is as pretty and perfumed as you could hope for. This Reserva is cut from the classic cloth of Spanish Rioja, with tobacco nuances, burnished leather, dried blueberries and bing cherry notes. The oak is well integrated adding some of the dusty notes and subtle grilled herb components. Normally a $20 bottle of wine this would over-deliver even at that price. For $15, you have one of the best every day reds worthy of pairing with any pork, beef or lamb dish you could think of throwing at it.

This is a great value for a reserva Rioja. The nose shows spice, leather and bright red fruit. The palate is soft and integrated with raspberry, sweet tobacco and spice. The long finish is dominated by vanilla and fragrant red fruit. This wine is half the price it should be.
