Leopold Bros. Maryland Style Rye Whiskey (750ml)

SKU #1083757 Whisky Advocate

Outer quote mark Maryland, Monongahela, and, I guess, Modern are the American rye styles. Maryland was a gentler rye, less spicy, and not as hot/sweet as modern rye. This has the dry-grass spice of rye, a hint of cocoa powder, and a bit of funk that blows away to hints of fruit. Light and clean on the palate, some sweetness that rapidly dries out in a grassy, herbal wave. Intriguing, without being overwhelming. (Vol. 22, #4) Inner quote mark

K&L Notes

The Leopold Bros Maryland Style rye is an homage to a regional style of whiskey making that which has been lost for over fifty years—or, depending on who you ask, since Prohibition. Characterized by a high-rye mash bill, some corn, and a good chunk of malted barley, Maryland rye whiskey became immensely popular with Union Soldiers during the Civil War, tasked with guarding Washington DC. After Prohibition, many of Maryland’s distilleries—located in urban areas—were sold off for their property value, or turned over to industrial enterprises looking to capitalize on Maryland rye’s reputation with a cheaper substitute. The last Maryland rye distillery from that era closed its doors forever in 1972. Thanks to a friendly collector, Todd Leopold was able to taste through numerous samples of real Maryland rye whiskey from 60+ years ago and gauge its flavor profile. Working from those tasting notes, the Leopold Bros Maryland Style Rye Whiskey is made with a mash bill of 65% rye, 15% corn, and a whopping 20% of our beloved floor malted barley. Using a variant of yeast that brought out the fruitiness of the rye, rather than its spiciness, the whiskey was pot distilled and aged five years in our Colorado dunnage warehouses. The resulting spirit is fruity and floral at its core with a soft, buttery finish that emulates the rye whiskies of Maryland’s historic past.

The folks at Leopold's are really trying to tell you that theirs is a distinctive take on that category of whiskey. When they say "Maryland", they mean it. I couldn't say how this compares to historical examples of the style, but no matter: I can say for certain that it stands out clearly and distinctly from the general run of Pennsylvania ryes. What you have here is a fiesty but precociously characterful whiskey. The richness stands out for me. Whereas a good many ryes are lean on the palate without extended aging, this already telegraphs weight. The flavors run to dried fruit, flax oil, fresh baked rye bread, leather, dried orange peel, ovaltine, and aged Virginia flake-cut pipe tobacco. Well worth knowing for rye whiskey fans.
