2008 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac

SKU #1081831 95 points Decanter

Outer quote mark As you would expect, this turns up the bass on its neighbour. It's a full-throttle display with a powerful dark undertow, approaching peak-Pauillac. It is wonderfully balanced, with flavours of graphite, dark plum, coffee and grilled rosemary, and the tannins are so well structured, fine and layered. It's a great wine in an average year, showing its pedigree and easily among the best in the appellation in 2008. (JA) Inner quote mark (12/2017)

Outer quote mark One of the richer, sexier wines in the vintage, the 2008 Pichon-Longueville Baron offers a rock star perfume of red and black currants, crushed violets, graphite, and charcoal, with a hint of truffle working its way in there as well. Deep, medium to full-bodied, and expansive, it has more fruit and opulence than most, sweet tannins, and a great finish. It’s a wine to seek out and has another 20 years of prime drinking. Outer quote mark A sleeper of the vintage, the 2008 Pichon Longueville Baron is one of the densest, most concentrated wines of Pauillac in 2008. An inky/purple color is followed by aromas and flavors of creme de cassis, blackberries, charcoal, coffee and licorice. Exceptionally full-bodied with velvety tannins and undeniable appeal, this gorgeous, well-proportioned, larger than life 2008 should age effortlessly for two decades or more. Outer quote mark The 2008 Pichon-Baron has a much better bouquet than the 2007 (as you would expect), replete with blackberry, blueberry, minerals and graphite that are all very well defined and focused. The oak here is superbly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, and full of tension and energy. It builds nicely in the mouth, delivering real brightness and vivacity on the finish but retaining that sense of subtle Pauillac austerity. In many ways this is quintessential Pichon-Baron and one of the overachievers in recent years. It comes highly recommended. (NM) Inner quote mark (1/2019)

Outer quote mark Wow. So much bright fruit in this with orange peel and black currant character. Floral and lively. Full body, silky tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Hard not to drink now. Do it. Inner quote mark (6/2016)

Outer quote mark Powerful, rich, firm and solid. The tannins are rounded and there is a noticeable amount of wood here, although the wine has preserved its fresh fruit at the same time. Very linear, the finish showing ripe plums and sweet fruit. (RV) Inner quote mark (4/2011)

Outer quote mark Currently, the 2008 Pichon-Baron is showing even better than the 2009, as the oak has already fully integrated into the body of the wine and the balance here is now impeccable. The bouquet is deep, complex and really lovely, as it delivers scents of black cherries, cassis, cigar smoke, a nice touch of young cabernet “weediness”, coffee, fine soil tones and toasty new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and really classy, with fine focus and balance, firm tannins and excellent length and grip on the poised and classy finish. Really a classic vintage for Pichon Longueville. 93+ Inner quote mark (7/2011)

Outer quote mark Bright ruby-red. Black cherry, leather and strong graphite minerality on the nose. Silky, sweet and suave, with dark fruit flavors lifted by a violet element and given grip and definition by a strong mineral spine. Wonderfully deep, ripe Pauillac with strong early sexy appeal. Finishes very bright and long, with serious but sweet tannins. Deceptively approachable now, this wine is built for two decades of evolution in bottle. (ST) Inner quote mark (7/2011)

Outer quote mark Another very dense dark crimson wine. Very high toned. Delicate palate attack – rather vivacious. Not concentrated and dances across the palate. Very racy. Rather silky. Very good balance and rather aristocratic. Though far from dense. Real lift on the end. Very dry finish. Nothing luscious about this! (JR) 18/20 Inner quote mark (1/2012)
