Laphroaig "Triple Wood" Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1076003 93 points Whisky Advocate

Outer quote mark Initially aged in bourbon barrels before being transferred into quarter casks, and ultimately oloroso sherry butts. The sherry influence adds an additional dimension to the quarter-cask style, hence an oily nose of dates, vanilla, tropical fruits, and bonfire smoke. The palate is drier than might be expected, with Laphroaig iodine, barbecued meats, muted sherry, and peat smoke. The finish comprises dried fruits and lots of oak. (GS, Fall 2018) Inner quote mark

K&L Notes

A limited release that was supposed to be for European travel retail only! Lucky for us some popped up in California. This is essentially the Quarter Cask finished in oloroso sherry butts. There's an extra touch of savory richness at the back end, but the entry is all peat and iodine, just like we've come to expect from Laphroaig. The finish really lurks for some time, morphing from smoke to nutty rancio to savory sea salt. It's a great new release from Laphroaig—a distillery that has been absolutely killing it with their special-edition whiskies as of late.

Holy lovely peaty sherry goodness. My earlier review of Laphroaig 10 Year, as in, "Caution! And good news!" might be easily ignored at this point: it was an early Scotch for me, and on the outer boundaries of what I appreciated at the time. However: this single malt fulfills everything that I eventually love about a Laphroaig without having to wait a minute extra. It's got that vanilla and peat and that delicious malty, grainy note, and it's just delicious.

Big and smokey are two words to describe this lusty and delicious single malt. The Triple Wood Laphroaig differs from other Laphroaig bottlings by the round richness provided by the used sherry barrel aging.

This is a big dram of whisky! The Laphroaig Triple Wood has a deep golden color and a very rich doughnut house nose with bass note peat. On the palate this single malt is oily and textural with lots of glycerol sweetness, but the bright, briny peat elements bring it into balance. This is manly Islay to drink by the fire on a cold night!
