2009 K Vintners "The Creator" Walla Walla Valley Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah

SKU #1075870 95 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark This is co-fermented Old Stones Vineyard and Cailloux Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Syrah (40%), showing the funk of the terroir and less of the varietal character of the fruit. It's flavorful and textural, with earth, anise and smoke notes, plus a mineral-driven wet-stone base and exceptional length. *Cellar Selection* (PG) Inner quote mark (12/2012)

95 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Firm, focused and dripping with personality, this is full of wet slate, rare meat and sourdough toast flavors, along with dense, dark blueberry and plum fruit, all competing for attention against polished tannins that let the finish roll on and on. (HS) Inner quote mark (11/2012)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Representing yet another of his Cabernet – Syrah co-ferments (here 30% of the latter) and sourced from Old Stones Vineyard and Christophe Baron’s Cailloux Vineyard respectively (both mentioned in small print on the label), Smith’s 2009 The Creator is smokily-scented with peat and black tea, soy, licorice, juniper berry and cassis. A bitter edge from huckleberry is added to the pungent impression that the aforementioned features lend this wine’s dense, finely-tannic, rather stiff palate. A faintly dry spot as well as the wine’s bitter elements take the edge off of its finish. Broad and a bit brawny, I doubt this will ever measure up to the very best of its vintage, impressive though it is. I won’t try to handicap it at first acquaintance other that to say that it was certainly created with the notion of long-aging but will have to further convince me. (DS) Inner quote mark (12/2012)

91 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Good full red. Superripe aromas of redcurrant, plums, licorice, flint and smoke. Dense, sweet and powerful; concentrated but tightly wound today, conveying an impression of thickness and finishing with a chewy, saline quality and firm tannic spine. I wanted a bit more primary fruit and yet this wine has plenty of inner-mouth energy. (ST) 91+ Inner quote mark (11/2012)

K&L Notes

Charles Smith is like the Sammy Hagar of wine, and not just because his curly locks are reminiscent of the one-time Van Halen front man. Like Hagar, Smith is more memorable for his contributions to the world of alcoholic libations than for his 11 years managing rock bands in Scandinavia. (For those of you not in the know, Hagar may be better remembered for Cabo Wabo premium Tequila than for anything he did with Van Halen.) The wines under his K Vintners label are always critically acclaimed, and because of their small production, they sell out EXTREMELY FAST. While there's more of The Creator than the En Chamberlain, production was still only a tiny 635 cases. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) from the Callioux and Old Stones vineyards and Syrah (40%) from Old Stones, the Creator is incredibly complex, unique and intriguing. Black olive, earth and spice notes complement red and black fruit in this structured and full-flavored wine.
