Outer quote mark The handpainted ceramic bottle is gorgeous, but so is what’s in the bottle: a blend of three- four- and five-year old Tequilas. Look for a deep amber hue and complex aromas that unfold jalapeño, brown sugar and cocoa. The palate-coating, slightly viscous palate opens with clove and coriander, warming to cocoa, browned butter, and sarsaparilla, and finishes on black pepper and cinnamon. The overall effect almost reads like a Tequila-based amaro. (KN) Inner quote mark (5/2019)

K&L Notes

Grand Mayan is a rare Extra Añejo from the exceptional La Cofradia distillery, a blend of tequilas aged for three, four, and five years. It's a tequila for sitting and sipping, not for shooting, and it's packaged in a traditional, hand-painted talavera bottle that will look beautiful on the bar. Ultra rich, but not overpowered by oak, this is a real gem for tequila connoisseurs. Fans of the tall blue and white ceramic bottle rejoice, there is another beautiful bottle to add to your collection...and it has even better tequila in it!

Grand Mayan is a rich and lush tequila. If you like your extra anejo with big caramel notes and a bit of peppery spice then this should be right up your alley. The nose has some syrupy qualities with dark caramel and orchard fruit (primarily peach/nectarine). The mouth continues these notes with a touch more spice and big tones of spun sugar and vanilla. This tequila also has a lot of weight on the palate with a viscous mouthfeel.

This Grand Mayan tequila is delicious for sipping as it has smooth notes of brown sugar and clove spices. The anejo exhibits a nice golden brown hue in the glass and what I love is that it's not harsh at all. I'm not a big tequila drinker but I find myself going back for sip after sip on this one.

Many brands are inextricably linked with their fancy bottles - especially when it comes to Tequila. Grand Mayan, while in a beautiful hand painted talavera pottery bottle, is really known for the tequila inside. The Ultra Anejo is an exceptionally balanced blend of very old tequilas that retains a bright and robust agave flavor. While the sweet vanilla and winter spice of the wood influence is an important part of this tequila's profile, it's really all about the gentle pepper spice and the amazing fruit of the agave coming through. With agave prices continuing to climb through the roof, Grand Mayan, which has always offered tremendous value, seems to get better and better everyday.

This is a very bold spirit and a great example of an expertly crafted tequila in the relatively new "Extra Anejo" category. To qualify as "Extra Anejo" the tequila must spend a minimum of three years in barrel, but with this Grand Mayan the tequila spends 5 years in barrel. As a result, the influence of oak is immediately apparent on the nose, but there are also wonderful notes of caramel and pepper that really come alive on the palete as you slowly savor the long finish. Worth the splurge!
