2009 Calera Central Coast Pinot Noir

SKU #1073505 92 points Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2009 Pinot Noir bursts from the glass with expressive red fruit, flowers, spices and mint. It shows lovely mid-palate juiciness and an elegant, polished finish. At $24 a bottle, it may very well be the single finest value in American Pinot Noir. I was hardly surprised to learn Emirates chose to serve this wine in their business class cabin last year. This is a dazzling wine from start to finish. It is also one of the two Pinots in this tasting (the others are 2008s) made from fully destemmed fruit. Wow! (AG) Inner quote mark (8/2011)

Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Calera's basic Central Coast Pinot is a good, drily crisp wine, showing some real elegance. A little heavy, it shows cherry, red currant, herb, tobacco, teriaki beef and sandalwood flavors. Inner quote mark (6/2011)

Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Firm, offering an appealing mix of savory herb, dried berry, anise, cedar and rhubarb notes, turning somewhat simpler on the finish. (JL) Inner quote mark (6/2011)

Calera is simply a pioneer in California Pinot Noir, purchasing what is now their estate vineyard all the way back in 1974 in what amounted at the time as the middle of nowhere in the world of California wine. Not much has changed in the last 37 years, Josh Jensen is still the owner, there have been a few new blocks planted on the estate and the lineup of wines has expanded to include Central Coast bottlings of Chardonnay, Viognier and Pinot Noir from highly sought after purchased fruit through out the myriad of Central Coast Appellations. The Pinot is made from seven vineyards including the Laetitia Vineyard and the Doctor’s Vineyard in Santa Lucia Highlands. This is some pretty high quality fruit for a paltry $20 price tag. Brimming with black cherry, oolong tea, pastille candy and soft oaken notes this is one deliciously drinkable Pinot Noir. This is a wine that will get better over the next 3-4 years but we think that once you try it, it certainly will not last that long in your cellar. Easily this wine is a forerunner for the Pinot Noir value of the fall.
