2001 Galardi "Terra di Lavoro" Roccamonfina

SKU #1073237 97 points Vinous

The 2001 Terra di Lavoro is a blockbuster. Still incredibly fresh and vibrant, the 2001 impresses for its superb overall balance and poise. There is exceptional clarity and nuance in the glass, not to mention finessed tannins that frame the intensity of the fruit all the way through to the glorious finish, where hints of chocolate, espresso and minerals add the final layers of complexity. Drink now-2030 (AG) (8/2010)

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2001 Terra di Lavoro is a stunning wine that is enjoying a most peaceful and positive evolution today. It delivers a level of complexity and elegance that puts it in a class of its own. The bouquet exhibits tertiary aromas of smoke, ash, licorice, cured meat and dried fruit. Those aromas show a fluid quality that is backed by energy and momentum. Wait a few moments and dried herbs, rosemary and mint rise from the glass. It shows a silky, elongated quality in the mouth with fine tannins and extra long persistency. Given how well this wine is holding up, it still has a long way to go. Drink now-2030 (ML) (4/2015)

95 points Wine Spectator

This is an extraordinary wine. It first smells like rubber, turning to intense minerals, blackberries and cherries. Full-bodied, with ultra fine silky tannins and a long, long finish. I have always loved it despite its being difficult to taste when young. Made in beautiful hillside vineyards outside of Naples. Aglianico and Piedirosso. (JS) (2/2004)

K&L Notes

94 points from Daniele Cernilli (DoctorWine): "This blend of Aglianico and Piedirosso is aged in new-wood barriques for 12 months and is a favorite of Robert Parker who has given it high marks. It has a dark, impenetrable and concentrated red color that leans towards a deep black and distinct aromas of humus and underbrush, oak bark and resin. The mouthfeel is imposing with its strong tannins that are far from being tamed. Impressive. (03/2015)

- Once named Enotria for its abundant vineyards, Italy (thanks to the ancient Greeks and Romans) has had an enormous impact on the wine world. From the shores of Italy, the Romans brought grapes and their winemaking techniques to North Africa, Spain and Portugal, Germany, France, the Danube Valley, the Middle East and even England. Modern Italy, which didn't actually exist as a country until the 1870s, once produced mainly simple, everyday wine. It wasn't until the 1970s that Italy began the change toward quality. The 1980s showed incredible efforts and a lot of experimentation. The 1990s marked the real jump in consistent quality, including excellence in many Region that had been indistinct for ages. The entire Italian peninsula is seeing a winemaking revolution and is now one of the most exciting wine Region in the world.
