1998 Roger Sabon "Cuvée Prestige" Châteauneuf-du-Pape

SKU #1072941 95 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Showing more maturity than most, with colors of garnet and brick and aromas of brick dust and sandalwood. But don?t be fooled, this still has a solid core of sweet cherry, currant and brandy-soaked plum fruit, layered with sweet spice, tobacco and mineral notes that drive the structured finish. Tender for the most part, but with some latent grip, this is a lovely version of the traditional style. (JM) Inner quote mark (9/2007)

Outer quote mark Sabon’s 1998 Cuvée Prestige has reached full maturity. Dark plum/garnet, with notes of smoked duck, garrigue, licorice, cedar, and blue and black fruits, the wine is savory and complex. Full-bodied, with a silky texture, loads of glycerin, opulence, and flesh, this wine is at that magical peak of maturity, where it should hold for another 5-6 years. It is drinking splendidly well, for those who own it. (RP) Inner quote mark (6/2010)

Outer quote mark Possessing a textbook, classical feel, the 1998 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Prestige delivers fantastic complexity and has loads of garrigue, sweet spice, lavender, and both red and black fruit driven aromas soaring from the glass. More meaty qualities develop with air, and this medium to full-bodied, balanced Châteauneuf-du-Pape is drinking at point. There’s still plenty of length and grip on the finish, and while it should evolve gradually over the coming decade, I would drink bottles over the next 2-3 years. Inner quote mark (3/2012)

Outer quote mark Saturated ruby-red. Jammy, superripe black cherry aroma is like a fruit essence. Highly aromatic in the mouth, where the jammy, intense red fruit and bitter chocolate flavors are nicely framed by ripe acids. Because of its better balance, this comes across as less alcoholic than the '99 version despite being somewhere in the 15.5% range. Finishes long, ripely tannic and almost stylish. A great showing; I underrated this wine a year ago. (ST) Inner quote mark (2/2001)
