2009 Banshee "Mordecai" Red Blend

SKU #1071527

What happens when a winery is able to secure small lots of fruit from some of the best vineyards in California, but not in large enough quanties to make affordable wine? Banshee's Mordecai is one winery's delicious solution. The 2009 Mordecai Proprietary Red blends Syrah, single-vineyard Turley Zin, Napa Mourvedre, Paso Grenache, plus a splash of this and that, to create this vibrant, juicy, red berry fruited but well-balanced blend for a fraction of what you'd pay for single vineyard or single varietal wines from the vineyards they have access to. (They mention vineyard sources like Whitehawk, Alder Springs, Grist and Parmalee Hill as potential sources, but they can't actually reveal what they get from where.)

Our buddies at Banshee have done it again. Somehow they keep coming across some of the best barrels and highest quality fruit sources around and spinning them into wonderfully affordable delicious wines. In the case of the Mordecai they have come up with what I like to call a kitchen sink blend, a little bit of a lot of things. This style blend was first made wildly popular by Orin Swift's "The Prisoner" bottling, and this wine reminds me a lot of that wine back when it was $20 rather than $35. It also is a lot more honest than The Prisoner ever was, with much less obtuse ripeness and residual sugar and much more of a balanced, food-friendly nature. I really think this is wildly crowd pleasing!
