2008 Malescot-St-Exupéry, Margaux

SKU #1071336 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark An amazing success in this vintage, the dark ruby/purple-hued 2008 reveals its noble terroir in its complex aromatics of spring flowers and burning embers/charcoal. A medium to full-bodied mouthfeel displaying no hard edges and a seamless integration of acidity, tannin, alcohol and wood result in an approachable, already evolved wine that can be drunk now or cellared for 15+ years. Outer quote mark The 2008 Malescot St Exupery has a conservative, correct bouquet that to be frank is rather unexciting compared to its peers, although it does open and reveal briary and crushed rose petal scents and bingo, you are soon under its spell. The palate is medium-bodied with “furry” tannins, good depth of fruit and it has a fine line of acidity. I like the spine of this Margaux and the classicism shown towards the bright finish. It is one of those wines that meliorates with acquaintance, approaching previous scores that I have awarded this wine. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 10-Year On tasting. Drink through 2035. Outer quote mark Sweet berry and milk chocolate aromas and flavors. Medium to full-body, with chewy tannins and a medium finish. Refined and pretty. Tight. Let it open with three to four years of bottle age. Inner quote mark (12/2010)

90 points Connoisseurs Guide

Outer quote mark Even sweeter and more polished than its high Merlot content (35%) might suggest, this supple, smooth-as-can-be Margaux is ripe and refined and invitingly fruity with ripe cherries always in the fore. It is not at all deficient in tannin, but avoids any undue astringency, and, while certain to grow for a few years, it affords pleasurable drinking even now. *One Star* Inner quote mark (3/2011)

90 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark An excellent effort for the vintage, with almost lush mulled plum and steeped currant fruit that melds into the mesquite- and tobacco-framed finish. This has a supple feel, without the vintage's crisp angularity or underripeness. (JM) Inner quote mark (3/2012)

This might be my favorite wine from the 2008 vintage to drink tonight. Crushed flowers, blackberry fruit, hints of charcoal and a seamless texture make this delicious already. Anyone who buys a case of this and drinks a bottle a year over the next dozen years will be richly rewarded

My favorite of the '08 vintage (the last affordable vintage) this Malescot is the perfect synthesis of old and new style. The vintage itself is classic and the acidity is evident, hinting at this wines long term potential. The nose is proper claret red fruit, cassis, bright and fresh. Very little oakiness. The palate is lifted and long. Tannins are evident but not out in front of the fruit and all in all you just have to admire the balance here that so many other Bordeaux lack.

I have tried this wine twice now, and it was one of my favorites both times. The nose is very expressive, with spice, cassis and berries, and after a few hours open, coffee scents came through. The cassis and spice are the dominant flavors on the palate, which is very balanced, with an elegant mouthfeel. I am amazed at how balanced and expressive this wine is now.
