A candidate for wine of the vintage is the 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Boisrenard. Subtle aromas of vanillin intermixed with blackberry, black cherry, chocolate, and espresso characteristics explode from the glass. In the mouth, there is firm tannin as well as enormous fruit, undeniable southern Rhone typicity, powerful, concentrated, thick flavors, and a finish that lasts for 45+ seconds. This is a stunning effort for Boisrenard. (RP)

Immense. Dark and rich, thick and ripe, this serious wine is loaded with black fruit, massive ripe tannins and lots of toasted oak notes heavy with chocolate and mocha accents. Full-bodied and powerful, this is an ager whose minerally terroir--which covers the fruit like a slab of marble--will need time to express itself. (PM)

A big, full bore wine, the 2000 Domaine de Beaurenard (Paul Coulon et Fils) Châteauneuf du Pape Boisrenard has decadent blackberry, cassis, floral and spiced meat notes literally jumping from the glass. With air, more underbrush and graphite notes show up and lead into a full bodied, balanced wine that simply saturates the palate with lush fruit. Low in acidity with a thick, rich texture and a long finish, this doesn’t have the structure of the ’01 but is still a pup with a long life ahead of it.

Very good medium ruby. Expressive, highly aromatic nose combines black fruits, violet, bitter chocolate and espresso. Tightly wound and intensely flavored, with deep black fruit flavors and considerable sweet, spicy oak. Tannins are firm but not hard. A solidly built wine that should age well. (ST)
