2007 Rieussec, Sauternes (Previously $90)

SKU #1070253 93-96 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Balanced and very spicy, with almond paste and apricot. Full-bodied, medium sweet, with a long, fruity, tangy finish. Layered and stylish. (JS, Web Only—2008) Inner quote mark

90-93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Bright, pale yellow-gold. Aromas of very ripe peach, honey and vanilla are a bit youthfully disjointed. Sweet, supple and fat, currently showing more spice than fruit. Finishes broad and spicy, with a suggestion of minerality. (ST) Inner quote mark (8/2008)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2007 Rieussec is a blend of 87% Semillon, 4.5% Muscadelle and 8.5% Sauvignon Blanc picked between 13 September and 31 October. It has an almost Barsac-like bouquet with barley sugar joining the ginger and honeyed notes, quite powerful although I feel this is just going through a sullen patch at the moment. The palate is very pure and balanced with a wonderful seam of acidity that slices through the viscous botrytis fruit, quite spicy on the finish … . (NM) Inner quote mark (1/2017)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Sweet, vaguely sticky nose. Certainly impressive for the sugar level! And there’s an attractive savoury undertow that stops it being sickly. Lots there. Reverberates. Long. Very long. It has that thing that a good Condrieu has: a subtext. 19/20 points. (JR) Inner quote mark (4/2008)

K&L Notes

K&L's Bordeaux buyer, Clyde Beffa Jr., says this is superior to Rieussec's 2005, and much cheaper!

The Lafite group took Rieussec to the next level in 2007. Rich and layered with notes of dried honey, lemon citrus, apricots and white flowers, it definitely has great sweetness but also lift and vibrancy from the acidity. This is definitely one of the most enjoyable Sauternes on our shelves right now.

This Rothschild property needs no introduction, and it is from another good vintage for Sauternes. The 2007 Rieussec is showing less sweetness and more spices, although with plenty of ripe fruit flavors, peaches and nectarines come to mind. A chunk of blue cheese, some roasted nuts and a glass of that is sure a ticket to paradise.
