2009 Littorai "Cerise" Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

SKU #1069961 94 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Cerise Vineyard's shale soils consistently show its quality and staying power. This wine is rich and dense on the nose, with ample cherry fruit and an almost stern presence. It remains dense on the palate and shows considerable grip, as well as good acidity and pungency, and a long finish. Harmonious and imposing, though it still seems youthful. Drinking Window 2019 - 2026 (SB) Inner quote mark (4/2019)

Outer quote mark The 2009 pinot noir from the Cerise Vineyard is one of the absolute stars in the cellars at Littorai, and I may well be underrating it just a tad, as I do not have any experience with how this wine unfolds with bottle age. The stellar nose offers up a very high class mélange of red and black cherries, fresh herb tones, raw cocoa, a beautifully complex base of soil, woodsmoke and a deft base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and nascently complex, with great mid-palate depth, tangy acids, ripe tannins and great length and grip on the focused and bouncy finish. Very, very high class pinot noir! (Drink between 2015-2035) 94+ points Inner quote mark (6/2011)

Outer quote mark The 2009 Pinot Noir Cerise shows the earthier side of Pinot. Autumn leaves, crushed flowers, raspberries, licorice, game and smoke meld together in this singular, highly expressive Pinot. Firm yet well-integrated tannins frame the long finish. The Cerise needs at least another 2-3 years in bottle for some of the firmness to soften, but it will likely always be a touch wild and rustic. The Cerise was vinified with 25% whole clusters. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021. (AG) Inner quote mark (2/2012)

Outer quote mark Trim, focused aromas of blackberry, wild berry and raspberry follow through to a medium body and a delicate mouthfeel. A mix of subtle berry, mineral and loamy earth notes mark the finish. Drink now through 2018. Inner quote mark (10/2011)

91 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Good healthy dark red. Aromatic nose combines spicy red fruits, green tea and mineral high tones, plus a peppery nuance; smells less rich than the Hirsch. A spicy, intense midweight on the palate, but tight today and not yet displaying its inherent complexity. (This rocky style is always tough going early on, notes Lemon.) Offers very good breadth but no easy sweetness. Finishes with firm tannic spine and strong spice character. Needs time. (ST) Inner quote mark (5/2011)

K&L Notes

Littorai derives their unique sustainable farming techniques from the fertile cross currents of permaculture, agro-ecology and the agricultural philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, the father of biodynamic farming. In addition to using only natural materials, they avoid all fertilizers. Estate produced compost is their “fertilizer” of choice. For those sites which they do not farm themselves, they use by-the-acre contracts to insure maximum quality and vineyard control, and they strongly encourage all of their farmer-partners to use only organic materials. They do not employ farm certification systems, as they believe that the true motivation for engaging in sustainable farming practices should not be for marketing purposes, but should be only for the good of the land, for the good of those who work it and for the future generations to whom it truly belongs. The Cerise vineyard sits in the fog layer above the town of Booneville in Anderson Valley, and the winery notes that "yields are painfully low on this steep, rocky site and the intensity of the wine reflects this."
