2009 Brewer-Clifton "3-D" Sta Rita Hills Pinot Noir

SKU #1068403 95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Gorgeous fruit here with minerals and flowers and dark fruits. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long finish. Balanced and pretty with a long finish. Need another three to four years to soften. This is from a third year crop. Inner quote mark (12/2011)

Outer quote mark Deep ruby. Aromas of blackberry, incense, anise and Asian spices. Juicy, sappy and deeply fruity, with red and dark berry, mineral and floral pastille flavors enlivened by juicy acidity. Vibrant and light on its feet, with excellent focus and back-end cut. Elegant, flavorful wine, finishing with firm tannins, solid grip and outstanding persistence. (JR) Inner quote mark (10/2011)

Outer quote mark The 2009 Pinot Noir 3-D is a big, large-scaled wine that needs time to come together. It possesses striking inner perfume. Dark fruit, licorice and flowers wrap around the powerful, intense finish. This should be superb once the tannins begin to melt away. No one has done more to carry the banner for the Santa Rita Hills than Greg Brewer and Steve Clifton. Both together at Brewer-Clifton and separately in their other projects, Brewer and Clifton consistently deliver delicious wines that are also deeply thought provoking with regards to the potential these vineyard sites hold. The Pinots in particular are compelling. (AG) Inner quote mark (8/2011)

Allen Meadows - Burghound

Outer quote mark There is a hint of lacquer to the otherwise complex and notably ripe red berry fruit aromas that lead to rich, round and supple middle weight flavors that possess good mid-palate density and fine volume, all wrapped in a solidly persistent finish. The nose is frankly a bit odd but overall, I like the delivery, in particular the tightly focused finish. Inner quote mark (10/2011)

K&L Notes

A brand new wine for Steve Clifton and Greg Brewer and already sold out at the winery. The 3-D is made from Swan, Pommard and 667 clone Pinot Noir grapes planted on a gently sloping, west-facing vineyard with the classic sandy loam soils of the Sta Rita Hills. It has a striking nose, with orange peel, strawberry and pomegranate aromas that carry over to the palate, where the flesh out a bit and pick up peppery spice accents. Still pretty tightly wound, this has serious grip and a long finish, and will benefit from some time in the cellar.
