 Bright ruby-red. Vibrant, high-toned aromas of musky blackberry and pepper, with a whiff of exotic fruits. Juicy and firm in the mouth, with pliant black cherry and black pepper flavors complicated by notes of mushroom and earth along with an exotic suggestion of apricot pit. Finishes firmly tannic and long. A rather brisk style-and at the low end of the alcohol range among these '07s, at a mere 15.5%. (ST)  (5/2009)

 From another old vine site from Contra Costa (planted in 1896), the 2007 Zinfandel Salvador Vineyard represents the first of a group of wines that had not yet been bottled. More tart acidity is noticeable than in the other Contra Costa single vineyard wine, Duarte. It also shows briery, black raspberry, and cherry fruit intermixed with soil, underbrush, and pepper undertones. As always, a mind-boggling array of Zinfandels and Petite Syrahs has been produced by the world’s premier Zinfandel specialist, Larry Turley. He deserves remarkable credit for his “holy grail” quest to locate largely forgotten parcels of old Zinfandel vines, and preserve as many of these historic sites as possible. (RP)  (12/2008)

Zinfandel

- The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.
