Billed as 'the spiciest rye whiskey anywhere,' this is a blend of two rye whiskeys, both a minimum of two years old, sourced from multiple distilleries. The 2018 bottling has a mild, honeyed scent, while the palate surprises with vanilla custard contrasted by traces of smoke, eucalyptus and cigar wrapper. As promised, the long finish explodes with a spicy burst—but don’t worry, it’s not too extreme to sip. (KN)

High West made a momentous change to its recipe for Double Rye! this year, for the first time adding its own house-made pot still rye to a blend that was previously fully sourced from other distilleries. Apple blossom, yuzu, chamomile tea, walnut shells, pine boughs, and green-apple candy on the nose shift into an oily palate that starts off soft and then picks up speed and spice. Flavors of lemon, black pepper, walnut-and-apple chutney, dark chocolate, and a lively hit of green apple make this a satisfying pour—especially at the price. Above all, it validates High West’s skill as both blenders and distillers in their own right. *Number 14 in the 2018 Top 20* (SSB, Winter 2018)
K&L Notes
David Perkins is at it again with a new batch of whiskey created from two very different ryes — a 16-year-old combined with a 2-year-old. The result is a charming combination of youthful spice with the wood-polished flavor of maturity — cinnamon, mint, chocolate, and pepper all swimming together. For the price, it's one heckuva deal. Great for sipping on its own or for fancy rye cocktails. A real winner. 92 points Beverage Tasting Institute: "Light amber color. Exotic aromas of wintermint, sweet pickle, pistachio praline, anise, and pink peppercorns with a rich, chewy fruity-yet-dry full body and a gentle finish suggesting mint green tea and five spice. Fascinating."
