2009 Pierre Usseglio "Reserve des Deux Freres" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival, Previously $200)

SKU #1064948 95 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The 2009 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Deux Frères is a cellar selection of 95% Grenache and 5% Syrah that’s aged half in 300-liter new oak barrels, 20% in 1-year-old barrels, and the rest in concrete tank. Possessing a full-bodied, powerful feel, the wine shows only hints of its oak elevage with touches of vanilla and graphite that are balanced beautifully by decadent black fruits, tar, licorice, roasted meat, and herb aromas and flavors. While there’s solid structure and loads of ripe tannin, it stays fresh, impeccably balanced, and has serious length on the classically styled finish. This should be at its best 5-7 years after the vintage, and have 15+ years of longevity. Inner quote mark (9/2011)

Outer quote mark Bright violet color. Wildly complex scents of black raspberry, cherry compote, sassafras, allspice and licorice. Lush and palate-staining, with noteworthy intensity to its open-knit dark berry, spicecake and floral pastille flavors. Silky tannins come on late and meld smoothly with the deep, sappy fruit, which refuses to let go of the palate. I underestimated this powerful, vibrant wine last year. (JR) Inner quote mark (1/2012)

93 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark This has a touch more muscle and drive than many of its peers, with smoldering tobacco and dark espresso notes leading the way for a core of crushed plum, braised fig and steeped black currant notes. The long finish has lots of iron-tinged grip. Best from 2012 through 2023. Inner quote mark (11/2011)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The barrel-aged, all-Grenache 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Deux Freres shows hints of cedar and mocha on the nose, then moves into mature notes of leather, date and fig, finishing chocolaty and warm. It's still full-bodied and lush on the palate, but without the freshness and bold primary fruit of its youth, the alcohol has become more apparent. Drink it over the next few years. Ripeness and richness are still in vogue at this domaine, capably looked after by brothers Jean-Pierre and Thierry, with increasing assistance from Thierry's son, Gregory. In my opinion, these are wines that often show best in their plush, succulent youth, because when the opulent fruit begins to evolve and fade, it allows room for the alcohol and tannins to spread out and take over. This year, Thierry presented an exciting new amphora cuvée that incorporates all 18 of the permitted varieties and color variations. Will something like this be the way forward for Châteauneuf du Pape when faced with continuing climate change? It's certainly something to think about. (JC) Inner quote mark (8/2019)
