Jean Lallement Brut Champagne (Previously $50)

SKU #1059843 91 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark This is a meaty pinot noir–based Champagne. A tingle of white-raspberry acidity frames the wine’s richness, along with dark spice tones of cardamom and cumin that place it with the ginger-and-pork depths of a finely crafted ramen broth. Inner quote mark (12/2020)

91 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Rich and juicy flavors of crushed blackberry and cherry fruit, whole grain toast and Mandarin orange peel are framed by a firm acidity in this balanced Champagne, with a chalky underpinning. Features a zesty finish, with notes of grated ginger, anise and grapefruit peel. (AN) Inner quote mark (11/2021)

90 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Lallement's NV Brut is rich, vinous and super-expressive, with tons of Pinot character coming through. Kirsch, red plum and jasmine add striking inner perfume and sweetness. The Brut is perhaps a bit rustic, but it is also full of vinous intensity and long on personality. Disgorged: August 21, 2018. (AG) Inner quote mark (11/2020)

K&L Notes

This is a blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay from an incredibly small estate (only four hectares!) split between the crus of Verzenay and Verzy in the Motagne de Reims. Distinctive, nutty, citrusy and floral, layered and racy. Excellent bubbles.

Verzenay, the Grand Cru that this Champagne is from, is one of the most special places in the whole world for growing Pinot Noir and always seems to give a lovely, subtle hazelnut complexity to the wines that come from there. This is one of the very best, from a tiny grower that does everything themselves. If you are looking for something that is elegant, but still distinctive, this finely beaded, nut bread like Champagne will satisfy you perfectly.
