2008 Foxen "Toasted Rope" Santa Ynez Syrah

SKU #1058651

90 points Wine Spectator: "Complex, firm and spicy, with ripe plum, cedar, tobacco, sage and mineral flavors folding together. Full-bodied, with the sum being greater than the parts. Drink now through 2020. 430 cases made." (12/10) 89 points Robert Parker: "A blend of 84% Syrah and 16% Viognier, the 2008 Syrah Toasted Rope exhibits a medium ruby color (more like Grenache than Syrah) as well as a big, sweet bouquet of honeysuckle, tropical flora, and candied cherry and black currant-like fruit. This silky textured, opulent, lush, medium to full-bodied, charming Syrah should be drunk over the next 3-4 years." (08/10) A play on Cote Rotie (translated as roasted slope) is behind this oddly named though beautifully rendered blend of co-fermented 84% Syrah and 16% Viognier. This is rich, elegant, berry-scented and very impressive stuff. Aged for 16 months in 500 liter Hungarian oak puncheons, 50% new w/medium toast.
