1999 Frederic Magnien Vosne-Romanee "Vieilles Vignes"

SKU #1058608

From Allen Meadows: "There is often confusion relating to the difference between the wines of Domaine Michel Magnien and those of Frédéric Magnien. First, all the wines are made by Frédéric and thus the difference between the two names is one only of grape sources. All the Michel Magnien wines are from grapes owned directly by Michel (who is Frédéric's father). All of the wines labeled as Frédéric Magnien are from purchased grapes (not from purchased must or wine, an important distinction), with the exception of the Morey "Les Ruchots" and the Chambolle "Les Sentiers" (not reviewed here) as these are leased from Frédéric's grandfather. Frédéric very much likes his 99s but he preferred the challenge presented by his 98s. He says that making the 99s was almost too easy as there were no vinification issues to be concerned about and the crop was so clean that the wines almost made themselves. Stylistically, he prefers the 2000s as he believes they are more classically structured than the very forward and very ripe 99s. He says he did very little different in 99 other than to shorten slightly his cold maceration period as the grapes gave up their color and extract easily, and thus a long maceration wasn't necessary. These 99s saw varying amount of new oak and were bottled without fining or filtration between October and December ..." (Burghound, Issue 2, 04/2001)
