2007 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

SKU #1057735 100 points Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark One of the great vintages from this estate, surpassing even the 1990, 2000, 2001, 2003, and maybe the 2010 (time will tell with this one), the 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape from Vincent Avril delivers everything you could want from a wine. Full-bodied, intense and beautifully concentrated, with plenty of muscle and depth, it shows the hallmark elegance and purity of the estate, with sensational notes of kirsch liqueur, raspberries, incense, smoked meats and Asian spices. The blend is the normal 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah and the rest a mix of permitted varieties, brought up all in older foudre, and it's just now entering its prime drink window and has another two decades of longevity. 97 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Absolutely stunning, with a deep well of crème de cassis that's thoroughly pure and captivating, while black tea, fig cake, hoisin sauce, incense and graphite notes weave throughout. The supervelvety finish lets blackberry, boysenberry and crushed cherry fruit take an encore--as if this needed any more fruit. A fantastic display of precision in a very opulent year. *Collectibles, Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2009* (JM) Inner quote mark (10/2009)

95 points Int'l Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Powerful, pungent aromas of kirsch, dark berries, smoky herbs and spicecake, with notes of black olive and tobacco coming on with air. Chewy, palate-staining dark fruit flavors are complicated by bitter chocolate, licorice and black cardamom. Acts like a 2005 today, with serious structure but also superb depth of powerful, densely packed fruit. A hint of cherry skin adds grip and refreshing bitterness to the long, smoky, focused finish. Not an easy read right now: this demands cellaring. (JR) 95+ Inner quote mark (1/2010)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Plenty of oil, medicine and furniture polish on the nose – yet not a hint of faultiness. Instead, the fruit and the complexity blend together, and keep balance with the fiery body too. Spectacular effort! 18.5/20 points (RH) Inner quote mark (4/2022)

K&L Notes

5 stars, John Livingstone-Learmonth for The Cradle of The Rhône: "has a still firm red colour, a small line of ruby at the top. The nose shows reduction, animal tones from the Mourvèdre, with earthy, peppery tones, sage, nutmeg herbal notes, firm red cherry, kirsch notes, inner power. It has good scope, is going to burst out well. The palate is rich, enveloping, with a good continuity along its way, is well fuelled from within, reaches out with compact, redoubtable, closed notes. The juice is stylish, liberal, emerging gradually. It’s very intense, holds the concentration of the windy ripening that renders this vintage apart from other years; it doesn’t quite have the class of the best years. Blood and mineral are coming through; there’s a lot of late residual juice here, mineral, blood-like length." (02/2022)

I know it is pretty easy to recommend a wine with a 99+ rating... Isn't it almost perfection? But I did not only try this amazing wine but poured it for some lucky customers that came to our Big Rhone Tasting a couple of weeks ago! From my point of view, this was probably the very best Chateauneuf I tasted from this vintage. I'm not going to bother you with descriptions, but I will tell you, this wine will be part of the history of the Chateauneuf appellation!
