It has never been easy to regard Ridge's Geyserville bottlings simply as Zin, for, as once again is so evident here, they show a measure of depth and a degree of complexity rarely found in wines of the same name. Both rich and refined with sweeping impressions of red and black berries, sweet oak, briar, and just a touch of spiced candy, the wine exhibits remarkable energy and is never other than perfectly balanced. Its polish is sure to tempt many into drinking it now, but it has the pedigree and pieces in place to grow for years. *Two Stars*  (5/2010)

 The 2008 Geyserville Proprietary Red (72% Zinfandel, 20% Carignan, and the rest Petite Sirah, Mataro, and Mourvedre; 14.8% alcohol) exhibits a dense ruby/purple color along with lots of glycerin, blue and black fruits, pepper, and incense. This rich, fleshy 2008 may turn out to be more juicy and succulent than the 2007. (RP)  (2/2010)

This is not what is generally regarded as a typical Zinfandel. This well balanced, complex, cellar worthy wine is a true expression of classic California wine. Geyserville is a blend of Zin, Carignane, Petite Syrah and Mataro offers a bouquet dark brambly fruits and hints of toasted spices. The pallet consists of a reiteration of the same brambles as well as dark and brooding fruit. The structure that frames this wine is supple enough to be approachable now but will lie down for easily a decade. Recently at my sisters wedding we opened 92 and 94 as well as a 98 out of a magnum. All three wines were showing beautifully and were a display of the wine making prowess that Ridge embodies.

Over the last 40+ years the "Geyserville" bottling from Ridge Vineyards has been one of the best, if not on many occasions THE best Zinfandel-based bottling to come out of California. Simply put, nobody does Zinfandel better than Ridge. Few, if any have the irrefutable track record of Ridge and the 2008 Geyserville only adds to that legacy. A blend this year of 72% Zinfandel, 20% Carignane, 6% Petite Sirah and 2% Mataro, the Geyserville is both instantly accessible and age worthy. The nose is surprisingly ripe fruited with showy notes of briary blackberry, Kalamata olives, cranberry, white pepper and laces of oak toast. As typical for this bottling structure comes in spades on the palate with a dollop of dusty tannins and a long bursting finish. Flavors of clay, anise seed, dried raspberry, mocha and black coffee are perfectly meshed, and the sense of weight here is outstanding. It really doesn’t get any better than this.

- The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.


- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.

- Second in fame only to Napa, this "other" valley offers just about every climate and topography imaginable. From its cool and fog-enshrouded coastal regions on the far west, to the sprawling Alexander Valley on the boarder of Napa and the many little dips and peaks in between, Sonoma has been a vital wine-grape-growing region since the mid 1800s. Important sub-AVAs include Chalk Hill (known for chardonnay and sauvignon blanc), Dry Creek Valley (where zin is king) Knights Valley (largely cabernet land), Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast (both celebrated pinot and chardonnay zones).
