I am sooooo tired of these high alcoholic, no acid, jammy cabernets that seem to have become the norm in Napa Valley and other areas of the North Coast, it was an enormous surprise and joy to taste and consume the incredibly charming, impeccably balanced Sequoia Grove 2006 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, recently. True to the softer nature of the 2006 vintage, this Gem emphasizes currants, blackberry, to plumy fruit with notes of white pepper to licorice spiciness both in its opulent nose and across its broad, lush, viscous palate impressions. Again, the emphasis, here, is on soft, round, complex fruit, with no attempt to hide it under a ton of American oak. I like this wine a lot for its current drinkablity, yet there is enough structure and depth of character to allow it to improve and get better over the next three to six years. In spite of this, Anderson has informed me that this will be one of our house reds for the month. Enjoy! 14.2% ABV (Jim Barr)
