Hot on the heels of the hugely popular 2007 vintage (Wine Enthusiast's "Wine of the year" in 2008) is the latest and greatest from Bodegas Luzon. It's a terrific follow-up effort. The 2008 vintage in Jumilla was very successful, yielding wines with more weight and richness than 2007, though certainly not at the expense of complexity or balance. This blend of Monastrell and Syrah is once again full of dark cherry and plum fruits, with a hint of black olive and a slightly spicy licorice note to the finish. It's a terrific value to drink with a wide range of foods, particularly anything with a Mediterranean accent: grilled tuna with a black olive tapenade; a platter of Spanish cheeses and chorizo; lamb with garlic and rosemary....there endless possibilities for terrific food pairings with this delicious value. 89 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Opaque ruby. Blackberry, cracked pepper and anise on the nose, with a suave floral overtone. Vibrant dark berry flavors are nicely framed by silky tannins and given depth by a note of bitter chocolate. A note of violet lingers on the juicy, gently sweet finish. Hard to imagine getting more complexity for the money." (Sept/Oct '09) And from the Wine Spectator: "Cherry, licorice and tobacco notes are fresh and focused in this balanced red. Light, firm tannins provide enough structure for food, and the finish is lively." (11/09)

On Friday night a friend dropped by with some Spanish cheese. Luckily I had some Luzon on hand. It went great with the Valdeon that he brought over. (Valdeon cheese is a cow's milk cheese finished with a little goat milk--similar to a blue but not as pungent.) The Luzon cut through the creaminess of the cheese beautifully! I love it when I look like I know what I am doing.

- Also called Monastrell and Mataro, Mourvèdre is most famous for the ruby-hued wines of Provence's Bandol region, known for their spicy, gamey, blackberry character, though the grape is grown throughout Provence and the Southern Rhône. Thought to have originated in Spain, it is second only to Grenache in vine acres, with the best examples found in Rioja, Alicante and Penedès.
