Master Sommelier Emmanuel Kemiji, who used to work at San Francisco's Ritz-Carlton, is one of the most successful of a recent spate of somms to use their wine knowledge to actually make wine. He has a number of labels, perhaps the best know of which is Miura, which is dedicated entirely to Pinot Noir. His Almvs label is devoted entirely to Bordeaux Style blends. The 2004 Almvs (the Latinate spelling for Almus, which means bountiful), comes entirely from Napa's famous Caldwell Vineyard, also the source for Jospeh Phelps "Insignia," Viader and Selene reds. A blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Cabernet Franc, this is a weighty wine, but with all of the grace and balance you'd expect from a man who made his living pairing wine with food. Only 1,000 cases produced.
