2005 Suduiraut, Sauternes (375ml)

SKU #1046485 97 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark What a wine for the vintage, with spices and furniture wax undertones, then dried citrus fruit. Great intensity in this, powerful stuff. Perhaps the best 2005. Inner quote mark (4/2012)

Outer quote mark Bright gold. Perfectly balanced. Not sweet, and yet explosively sweet with flavors of fresh nectarine, scents of jasmine and honeysuckle. The sweetness pours out of the freshness, so it's impossible to taste them apart. The flavors last, perhaps because it's the kind of wine you'll want to roll around in your mouth over and over. Glorious. Inner quote mark (10/2008)

Outer quote mark *Three Stars* Ooh la la. From the generous aromas redolent of ripe peaches, sweet pears, honey, hints of caramel and blood oranges to its rich, oily, luxuriant texture and complex hints of botrytis that show up from first sniff to lasting aftertaste, this scrumptious bottling represents a first rate achievement by any measure. It is rich, genuinely layered and even a bit more advanced than the others, and while it is likely to last for two decades and more, it might come into perfection somewhat before the other highly concentrated bottlings. Outer quote mark Picked over a period of eight weeks, this wine shows the class and care resulting from such efforts. Citrus and white flower aromas lead to a wine that is not overtly rich, with subtle shades of botrytis and orange marmalade flavors. The acidity is vibrant, fresh, a great balance. Outer quote mark The quality of the botrytis is very exciting in the 2005 Suduiraut, as it seems very clean and really lifts the aromatics on the wine at this early stage. The simply beautiful bouquet offers up a classy mélange of pear, honeycomb, pineapple, acacia blossoms, a gentle touch of grassiness and a deft framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep, fresh and very light on its feet, with excellent mid-palate depth, impeccable balance and lovely length and grip on the tangy, focused finish. This wine blossomed stunningly with extended aeration, becoming more floral, more perfumed and more elegant as it sat in the glass. A great vintage for Suduiraut. Outer quote mark Tasted blind at the 10-Year On Tasting in Sauternes. The 2005 Château Suduiraut seemed a little out of sorts at first, although it comes together with honey, barley sugar, orange blossom and mineral scents that become more delineated as its aerates. The palate is very intense on the entry. There is a beautiful line of acidity that cuts through the viscous fruit, though the finish does not quite exude the precision of a top vintage, but still delivers that sense of class one expects from this address. Outer quote mark Shows dried pineapple, honey, pear, caramel and piecrust aromas. Full-bodied and very sweet, with spice, coconut, tropical fruit and apple tart flavors. Long and dense, yet lively. Best after 2013. (JS) Inner quote mark (3/2008)

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Medium yellow-gold. Incredibly sweet aromas of apricot, acacia honey and marzipan. Supersweet, round and fat, but with enough ripe acidity to leaven the wine's huge impression of volume. A powerfully fruit-driven Sauternes with superb depth, but it's almost too rich today. Finishes with palate-staining sweetness and length and surprisingly fresh acidity (I suspect the actual acid number is low). I'd give this 15 years in the cellar. This is carrying a high 165 grams per liter of residual sugar, and the percentage of new oak was raised from a normal 35% to 65% for this vintage, and yet the wine does not come across as woody. Inner quote mark (7/2008)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Tasted blind. Lightly cheesy, exciting nose. Great weight on the palate with unctuous texture and reverberation. A tad brûlée… 17.5/20 Inner quote mark (2/2017)
