2005 Angélus, St-Emilion

SKU #1044451 100 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The 2005 Angelus is as good as it gets, and despite having 2-3 decades of prime drinking ahead of it, is as profound a drinking experience as money can buy even today. Offering off the hook notes of blackcurrants, smoked herbs, blackberries, toasted spice, espresso and scorched earth, this beauty is unctuous and opulent on the palate, with incredible depth, yet never seems heavy, cumbersome or over the top. 100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Truly great stuff, this wine performed at a three-digit level both in the horizontal tasting of 2005s in Baltimore, as well as in Montreal at this mini-vertical. This sensational, opaque, bluish/purple wine offers up notes of vanillin, spring flowers, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, plus a touch of licorice. The wine hits the palate with a thunderous cascade of ripe, rich, concentrated fruit. It is full-bodied, multidimensional and layered. The tannins are beautifully integrated but still present, and the wood, acidity, alcohol, etc., are all beautifully assimilated in this magnificent, majestic vintage of Angelus. 98 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2005 Angélus is a gorgeous wine. Inky red fruit, mocha, espresso, dried flowers and iron give this potent, explosive Saint-Émilion tons of richness. The style is dense and heavily extracted - as was the norm at the time - and yet the 2005 is impeccably balanced. This is a magnificent showing from Hubert de Boüard, who has done so much to elevate the status of this once under-achieving property. (AG) Inner quote mark (4/2021)

97 points Decanter

Outer quote mark A vintage that needed careful handling during ageing because of the ripe concentrated fruits and relatively high alcohols. There is dark spice, almost primary aromatics, with some of the baby fat sliced off but still packed with eucalyptus menthol freshness. Saffron spices and baked earth starting to come through at 15 years old, along with cloves and chocolate. I love the texture as it opens up, wonderfully rich and supple. 97 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Beautifully focused notes of figs and ripe fruit on the nose, this is very perfumed. A lot of material in this wine, the center palate is incredible, lasting for minutes. This is full-bodied and super silky with fine tannins. A pinpointed ball of fruit, think lychee, and hints of chocolate on the finish. Inner quote mark (5/2012)

96 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Good red-ruby. Deep, sweet aromas and flavors of black raspberry, cassis, graphite and licorice. Wonderfully lush, silky and seamless, with a near-perfect balance of fruit and acidity. Very full in the middle palate but with terrific verve leavening the wine's total ripeness. This really coats the palate with flavor and the very long, slow-building finish features utterly sensual tannins. A great performance for this property. (ST) Inner quote mark (6/2008)

96 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark Angélus has both beautiful richness and shape in 2005, the sensual touch people hope to find in merlot that it so rarely and exquisitely delivers. The spice, the beeswax, the chocolate and black fruit are all there, but the focus is on the wine's subtle power, not any particular flavor. This had appeared black and superripe en primeur. Now there's a dark, earthy vibration in the tannin, a reverberation in the middle that touches senses beyond taste. Inner quote mark (10/2008)

96 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Black purple in color, with coffee, blackberry and currant on the nose. Full-bodied, with super velvety tannins and a long aftertaste of toasty oak and ripe fruit. (JS) Inner quote mark (3/2008)

95 points Connoisseurs Guide

Outer quote mark Among the top St. Emilion bottlings in recent years, Angelus rings the bell once again with its rich and opulent style. Full, ripe and plush with more than a slight resemblance to Napa's best, it is a deeply fruited and unabashed proponent of the new "international" model. Its juicy intensity moves it to the head of the class now, but it has the tannic substructure to grow for a good many years. Inner quote mark (3/2008)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Tasted blind. Mid glowing crimson. Fresh but not intense nose. Sweet and fresh and rich. Lots of pleasure here with the fruit counterbalancing the tannins. Very vivacious. Still youthful. (JR) 18/20 points Inner quote mark (2/2017)
