2006 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape

SKU #1044138 94 points Wine Spectator

Shows the fresh herb, tobacco and black cherry profile of the vintage, with an undertow of briar and tobacco. The long, sappy finish lets fresh acidity carry the day. This should age nicely, as there's nice dark fruit in reserve as well. Best from 2010 through 2029. (JM) (9/2009)

The 2006 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a traditional Chateauneuf with boatloads of garrigue, herbs de Provence, lavender and perfumed, licorice infused fruit. Showing beautiful complexity and intensity on the nose, the palate is medium to full bodied with sweet fruit, a soft, supple texture and an overall elegant character. I’d drink these over the coming 10 to 12 years. (8/2009)

Charvin’s 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape has turned out to be one of the vintage’s top efforts. Lovely sweet notes of glove leather, roasted meats, spice box, ground pepper, kirsch, and raspberries are present in this deep, full-bodied 2006. More evolved than the 2007, with copious concentration, elegance, and a Burgundy grand cru-like complexity as well as freshness, it should be enjoyed over the next 12-15+ years. (RP) (10/2008)

Bright red. Captivatingly perfumed scents of fresh red berries, cherry, minerals and flowers, plus an exotic note of incense. Pliant and sweet, with deep raspberry and candied cherry flavors, silky texture and firm mineral cut. Reminds me of serious, decadent Burgundy. Finishes with excellent clarity and red fruit persistence. This is gorgeous. (JR) (1/2009)

Domaine Charvin is one of my favorite producers in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Although it is never the most full-bodied, rough hewn or strident of the Rhone reds, it is, in my estimation, always one of the most beautiful and graceful examples from the appellation. The 2006 is no exception. Its dried floral, earth and blackberry tea nuances remind me of a fine Chateauneuf-du-Pape deeply inspired by the great red Burgundies to the north. Gorgeous.
