2006 Bodegas Alto Moncayo "Alto Moncayo" Campo de Borja

SKU #1042888 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark I tend to drink Alto Moncayo during its first 5-6 years of life. Although I was sure they had aging potential, I did not realize just how much longevity these wines possess. They are generally full-bodied, powerful (with at least 15.5% natural alcohol), concentrated, rich wines made from very old vines and tiny yields. If you are not into flavor concentration or care about artisanal wines from great terroirs that have been ignored for centuries, this may not be the wine for you. Not one of these ten vintages was close to full maturity. The sexiest, most up-front and ready-to-drink vintages include 2006 and 2003. (RP) Inner quote mark (11/2013)

Outer quote mark Deep ruby with a bright rim. Impressively complex, seductive bouquet of dark berry preserves, tobacco, graphite and smoky Indian spices. Pliant black raspberry and candied cherry flavors are enlivened by zesty minerals and firmed by fine-grained tannins. An exotic floral pastille quality emerges with air and carries into the finish, which is strikingly sweet, lively and persistent. I can't believe that this wine bears the touch of the same guy who is partially responsible for inflicting Australia's R wines on us. (JR) Inner quote mark (9/2008)

Outer quote mark This plush, dense red shows coffee and spicy oak, with berry and wild plum fruit and accents of licorice and black pepper. The tannins are firm but well-integrated, and this finishes warm and spicy. Modern and alluring. (TM) Inner quote mark (12/2008)

Outer quote mark The 2006 Alto Moncayo is big, intense and rich with oak, vanilla and spice notes supporting stunning, high quality blackberry and raspberry fruit. In the mouth, it’s full bodied, lush, soft and open with a fantastic, rich, seamless texture that carries into a long finish. Impressive! Inner quote mark (2/2010)

Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark One of the biggest wines you'll find from Spain. It starts with brawny, malty aromas of ultraripe berries, leather and earthy warmth. The palate is searing, with baked pie flavors, chocolate and heat. Finishes with even more licorice and mint, and at 16% this is one chewy red wine. Not for fans of elegant, lighter-framed reds. (MS) Inner quote mark (4/2009)

K&L Notes

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The purple-colored 2006 Alto Moncayo was aged in new French and American oak for 17 months before bottling without filtration. It offers up a sexy concoction of toasty new oak, lavender, spice box, cassis, and black raspberry. Round, rich, and voluptuous on the palate, it delivers plenty of up-front pleasure but hides enough ripe tannin to evolve for a few years. It can be enjoyed now and over the next decade."
