2006 Obsidian Ridge "Obsidian Ridge Vineyard," Red Hills Lake County Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1042303

From Robert Parker: "Named after the famed black marble-like soils called Obsidian, this fairly priced Cabernet Sauvignon from Lake County, made by Michael Terrien, reveals plenty of potential. Attractive red and black currant fruit intermixed with notions of damp earth, licorice, and spice box are found in this round, juicy, seductive, medium to full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon. It is ideal for drinking over the next 5-6 years." (12/08) According to Wine Enthusiast: "No question the flavors are right on, erupting in mouthfilling blackberries, cassis, cherries, cola and chocolate, with anise and cinnamon-dusted smoky oak..." (03/09) The Obsidian Ridge Vineyard is planted at 2,640 feet in the newly designated Red Hills Lake County appellation at the north end of the Mayacamas range. Named for its distinctive red, volcanic soils, this steep, sloping vineyard are shot through with obsidian. Low-vigor and great drainage help create wines with great tannic structure. The label's 2006 Syrah is fresh, with lively blackberry fruit and a hint of exotic ginger spice. Smoked meat notes are a subtle thread that winds through the wine from nose to palate, linking the two together. Full-bodied with balanced acidity, this wine is surprisingly approachable now, with a little air, with the structure to develop over the next five to seven years.
