Good red-ruby. Flamboyantly sexy aromas of raspberry liqueur, woodsmoke, incense, rose oil, soy sauce and truffle. Sweet, sexy and deep, with a creamy, almost decadent core of framboise and soil flavors given energy and lift by underlying minerality. Offers an uncanny combination of silkiness and verve and finishes with suave tannins and outstanding length. One of the sexiest California wines I tasted this spring. This Bordeaux blend comes from a vineyard on Pritchard Hill, above Lake Hennessy at an elevation of 1,400 feet, and is made by Andy Erickson with Michel Rolland consulting. (ST)

Beautifully crafted, rich and complex, focused on ripe, loamy currant, spice, subtle herb and mineral notes that are well-proportioned, offering depth and concentration while remaining elegant and fleshy. Has a long, persistent finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. (JL)

Vinous
The 2005 Ovid is just beginning to show the first signs of aromatic development. New leather, smoke, tobacco, mint and savory herbs give the 2005 much of its aromatic signatures. The 2005 has more than enough depth to drink well for another decade or more. Hints of mocha, blackberry jam and dark spices wrap around the fleshy finish. Even past its tenth birthday, the 2005 is a bit oaky and also a touch alcoholic. Most importantly, though, the 2005 shows just how far Ovid has come over the past decade. (AG)

K&L Notes
Another great Napa red from Andy Erickson, then-winemaker for Screaming Eagle, Arietta, and Hartwell. Working with consulting winemaker Michel Rolland and vineyard manager David Abreu, Erickson has made a true powerhouse. Rich and concentrated with mineral and vanilla notes. Elegant but not bashful, this wine will hold for at least a decade.
